BMW Executive: New X5 Doesn't Focus on Off-Road Upgrades; More Capable G74 Model Slated for 2029

At a media roundtable, Philipp Koehn, Senior Vice President of BMW Luxury Vehicles, BMW ALPINA, and Rolls-Royce, stated that enhancing off-road capability is not a priority for the all-new X5 (codenamed G65). He explained that engineering resources have been allocated to other areas instead. According to Koehn, further improving the X5’s off-road performance is currently not on the roadmap, as it is not among the top priorities. Compared to its predecessor, the new X5 features a larger body, increased cargo capacity, a broader range of powertrain options, significantly improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced driving dynamics thanks to BMW’s “Heart of Joy” technology—making it potentially the most capable X5 generation to date. Koehn also recalled seeing an owner at the Monticello Motor Club in New York maneuvering a previous-generation X5 (G05) through demanding off-road challenges. While he acknowledged that typical customers would unlikely use their X5s in such extreme conditions, he admitted being impressed by the vehicle’s actual off-road prowess. Additionally, BMW is developing a new SUV with off-road capabilities surpassing all previous X models. Internally codenamed G74 and scheduled for launch in 2029, this three-row SUV—project-named “Rugged”—is designed specifically for adventure-oriented scenarios. It will be more than just a raised X5 and may feature unique configurations such as tailgate-mounted seats. The all-new X5, meanwhile, will retain its two-row seating layout.
