Tesla Developing Natural Language Control for FSD via Grok Voice Assistant

Tesla is developing a new feature that will allow users to directly control its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system using natural language commands via the Grok AI voice assistant. The feature aims to let drivers issue instructions to their vehicles as if speaking to a human driver—for example, “Park at the driveway of the second house on the right” or “Turn left at the stop sign ahead; don’t go straight”—with FSD understanding and executing the corresponding actions. Currently, FSD still faces limitations in residential areas or at trip destinations, such as difficulty parking precisely at a specified doorstep. If successfully implemented, this new capability would significantly enhance FSD’s practicality in complex scenarios and enable it to remember users’ parking preferences at frequently visited locations—including preferred position, orientation, and parking method. Grok has been integrated into Tesla’s vehicle infotainment system since summer 2024, initially supporting open-ended Q&A, news summaries, voice-added navigation waypoints, and mid-route adjustments. Following a spring 2026 update, it also gained location-based voice reminders, such as “Remind me to take my gym bag out of the trunk when I get home.” Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, recently confirmed that the voice-controlled FSD feature is “under development,” corroborating earlier statements by Elon Musk. Musk previously indicated the feature could launch “in about three months,” potentially arriving by fall 2026 if development progresses smoothly. Although the timeline remains uncertain, the team has already entered the real-world validation phase. In the future, this technology could expand to control additional in-car functions—such as opening or closing windows, activating Dog Mode, or adjusting climate settings—further enabling users to operate their vehicles through everyday spoken language.
