Tesla's Robotaxi Hub Cleaning Robots Now Operational as Support Infrastructure Expands

Tesla’s Robotaxi hub in Austin was completed in March 2026, and its internal cleaning robots have already begun operations. The facility is designed to house and maintain Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet, including the Cybercab and Model Y Robotaxi variants. Recently, perimeter fencing and protective tarps around the site were removed, offering the public its first clear view of the vehicles. The cleaning robots feature large robotic arms equipped with an automatic tool-changing system, allowing them to switch between functional modules based on task requirements. Capabilities include vacuuming dust and debris, removing trash, and wiping high-touch interior surfaces. One specialized tool incorporates a microfiber module for cleaning delicate or frequently touched areas such as the 21-inch center display, windows, door handles, door buttons, and the interior side of the windshield. The robots can also pick up plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and items left behind by passengers, sorting them into a designated lost-and-found area. Tesla previously stated that if users cause significant interior soiling, the system will automatically charge a cleaning fee. In the future, these robots will also handle cleaning the Cybercab’s trunk. In addition to the cleaning robots, Tesla is constructing dedicated automated car wash facilities for Robotaxis, enabling vehicles to autonomously complete exterior cleaning. The company has also filed a patent for a disinfection system that uses ultraviolet (UV) light arrays to automatically sanitize vehicles between passenger trips. Currently, the steering-wheel- and pedal-free Cybercab is undergoing public testing in Austin and is scheduled to begin pilot operations as an employee shuttle within Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory. With the gradual deployment of infrastructure like cleaning robots, Tesla is steadily building a fully autonomous Robotaxi operations and maintenance ecosystem.
