Ford Launches Remote Disable Anti-Theft Feature for $7.99/Month

Ford has introduced a new anti-theft feature called "Start Inhibit," which remotely prevents a stolen vehicle from being restarted after it has been turned off. Integrated into the FordPass app and available on select newer models, the system works similarly to two-factor authentication: whenever the vehicle is unlocked, started, moved, or reset to factory settings, the FordPass-linked owner receives an alert. If the activity is unauthorized, the owner can remotely activate the feature via the app. Once enabled, the vehicle requires a one-time passcode generated by FordPass to be entered into the in-vehicle infotainment system before it can be restarted. If the vehicle is stolen, subscribed users can also request Ford to locate the car and share its real-time location with law enforcement. After the owner files a police report, Ford’s customer service center can collaborate with authorities to remotely activate "Start Inhibit" once the vehicle is shut off and log its final parked location. The feature does not forcibly shut down the engine while the vehicle is in motion; it only takes effect after the engine has been turned off, blocking any subsequent start attempts. Ford says this measure is designed to combat thefts involving devices that clone key fob signals to steal keyless-entry vehicles. "Start Inhibit" has been available for over a year but was not widely promoted until now. It currently supports certain 2024 and newer F-150 and Super Duty models, as well as the 2026 Expedition, Bronco Sport, and Mustang Mach-E. The feature is included in the "Security Package" subscription service, offering eligible vehicle owners one year of complimentary access. After the trial period, U.S. customers will pay $7.99 per month, while Canadian users will be charged CAD 9.99 per month.
