Huawei NCA Detects Plastic Bag on Highway and Actively Avoids It

On July 12, a vehicle equipped with Huawei's Qiankun ADS system was traveling at 96 km/h in the leftmost lane of a highway when a white plastic bag, partially intruding into the lane, was spotted hanging on the central barrier ahead. Upon detecting the obstacle, the system slightly reduced speed and gently steered right, smoothly maneuvering around the bag along the dashed lane markings without any noticeable delay. Footage from the dashcam showed that the vehicle did not drive directly over the plastic bag. The incident sparked debate: some argued that a human driver might have judged the plastic bag harmless and driven straight through, while others contended that avoiding it mitigated potential risks—such as the bag becoming entangled in the wheels or obstructing the driver’s view—and noted that safe avoidance conditions were present at the time.
