Audi Revamps Global Strategy with China-Exclusive Brand to Tackle Market Fragmentation

Audi's Chief Technology Officer, Ruben Mohr, recently stated that the era of a single model catering to global market demands has come to an end. Audi is now implementing a dual-pillar strategy: on one hand, maintaining its traditional Four Rings brand for the European market, emphasizing physical buttons, premium materials, and the Western definition of luxury; on the other hand, launching a dedicated AUDI brand for the Chinese market through its partnership with SAIC Motor, focusing on digitalization and automated features while de-emphasizing sporty performance. This strategy aims to free European models from design compromises previously made to accommodate Chinese market preferences, while enabling China-specific models to better align with local consumer tastes. This shift reflects the growing trend of regional differentiation in the global automotive market. Historically, Ford introduced smaller-displacement Model A and Model Y vehicles to comply with British tax regulations, and Toyota enlarged the Camry specifically for the North American market. Today, as Chinese domestic brands rapidly advance in new energy vehicles and electronic/electrical architectures, foreign automakers' dominance in China is being challenged—prompting companies like Audi to rethink and reshape their global product strategies.
