Tesla Develops Fully Autonomous Vehicle Designed for Wheelchair Users

Tesla is developing a new vehicle in Texas, USA, featuring full self-driving capabilities and specifically designed for wheelchair users. The model aims to address the poor experience currently associated with accessible ride-hailing services and fulfill the need for convenient, independent mobility among individuals who rely on wheelchairs long-term. Currently, Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing fleet primarily consists of Model Y vehicles, which cannot directly accommodate wheelchairs. Although the Cybercab—a model already in pilot production—has undergone accessibility enhancements such as removing the steering wheel and pedals, adding tactile Braille labels on physical buttons, and adjusting seat height to facilitate transfers for wheelchair users, it still does not allow wheelchairs to roll directly into the cabin. The Cybercab also includes dedicated space for guide dogs and assistive devices and was showcased at a recent conference for the blind, offering attendees hands-on experience. Tesla has previously added an accessibility service option within its autonomous ride-hailing app. Currently, this option redirects users to third-party providers, with a note indicating that Tesla’s in-house solution is still under development. At present, no autonomous taxi brand in the U.S. offers a fully wheelchair-accessible driverless ride service across its entire fleet. Tesla has not yet announced a specific launch timeline for the new vehicle, though based on its historical product development cycle, it typically takes several years from project initiation to mass production.
