BMW M Rules Out 1,000-HP EVs, Sticking to 800–850 HP as Performance Sweet Spot

At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M CEO van Meel stated that the BMW M division will not launch a pure-electric model with 1,000 horsepower. He noted that although BMW possesses the technical capability to achieve such power levels, it would lack practical relevance. While the M3 could theoretically produce 1,341 horsepower, the production version will be limited to an output between 800 and 850 horsepower. Van Meel explained that excessively high peak horsepower is difficult to effectively utilize on both public roads and race tracks, often remaining unused in most driving scenarios and increasing the risk of loss of vehicle control. Instantaneous ultra-high power output also causes significant heat buildup in the electric motor and battery, leading to a substantial drop in sustained performance. BMW M emphasizes “controllable driving pleasure,” prioritizing chassis tuning, intelligent torque distribution, dynamic handling feel, and long-term durability over chasing headline-grabbing figures like 0–100 km/h acceleration times. Limiting horsepower helps optimize energy consumption, reduces vehicle weight burden, extends the lifespan of the electric powertrain components, and preserves the signature M driving dynamics.
