Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, stated that the U.S. auto industry must prepare for the eventual entry of Chinese automakers into the American market and be ready to compete head-on with them. He emphasized that the United States cannot keep Chinese carmakers out indefinitely and must develop the capability to beat competitors at their own game. Currently, the U.S. Congress is advancing a bipartisan bill aimed at effectively banning Chinese-made vehicles from entering the U.S. market. Ford has publicly endorsed the legislation, agreeing with its goal of protecting America’s industrial base. However, Bill Ford stressed that even with such measures in place, American automakers still need to prepare for the possibility that Chinese manufacturers will eventually overcome these barriers and enter the U.S. market. Ford is developing a fully electric pickup truck priced around $30,000, specifically designed to compete against low-cost electric models introduced by Chinese automakers. In recent years, Chinese companies such as BYD and Geely have significantly expanded their overseas exports, rapidly gaining market share in key regions. Data shows that in June 2024 alone, Chinese automakers exported approximately 877,000 battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles—a year-over-year increase of more than 100%. Bill Ford also called for the U.S. to establish a long-term, stable automotive industry policy to address competition from major global manufacturing hubs like China, Japan, and South Korea. He underscored that vehicle development cycles are longer than political cycles, necessitating an industry strategy with bipartisan support to avoid frequent disruptions caused by election outcomes.
