BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel stated that the current EV market places excessive emphasis on high horsepower figures, but the upcoming all-electric M3 will not chase the 1,000-horsepower mark. He explained that achieving ultra-high power output in electric vehicles involves relatively low technical barriers; the real challenges lie in handling, stability, and sustained performance—particularly because thermal management issues can cause rapid performance degradation after brief peak power bursts. Although the all-electric M3 could theoretically reach 1,341 horsepower, BMW will cap the production model’s output between 800 and 850 horsepower to optimize energy efficiency, reduce vehicle weight, extend the lifespan of the electric drivetrain components, and preserve the M division’s signature driving dynamics.
