Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, revealed during the Goodwood Festival of Speed that the first all-electric M3 is slated for launch in 2027. It will retain the straightforward "M3" name—eschewing prefixes like "iM3"—to preserve the emotional heritage of the model line. Currently undergoing testing at the Nürburgring, the electric M3 features a four-motor architecture and will enhance driver engagement through simulated gearshifts and audio systems that replicate the sound of an internal combustion engine. Additionally, BMW will introduce a plug-in hybrid M3 powered by a straight-six engine, though its market debut will follow that of the all-electric version. Van Meel noted that while global M Series sales have dipped slightly—primarily due to the temporary halt in deliveries of S58 six-cylinder models as they undergo updates to meet Euro-7 emissions standards—demand for the M Series remains robust in China, with sales expected to continue growing. Regarding performance tuning, BMW M emphasized it will not blindly chase exaggerated power figures such as four-digit horsepower outputs, deeming such approaches impractical and lacking real-world relevance.
