Chinese Brands Claim 8 of Top 10 Global NEV Sales Spots in First Five Months of 2026

Global new energy vehicle (NEV) registration data from January to May 2026 shows that Chinese brands occupied eight of the top ten best-selling models. The Tesla Model Y ranked first with sales of 408,200 units, followed by Geely’s Galaxy E5/EX2 at second place with 183,000 units, and the Tesla Model 3 in third with 164,000 units. BYD had five models in the top ten, with the Song/Seal U (BEV + PHEV) selling 163,300 units to claim fourth place. The Li Auto i6 sold 99,000 units, ranking seventh, while the Xiaomi SU7 recorded sales of 90,300 units, placing ninth. Among the top 20 global NEV models, Chinese brands accounted for 17 spots; the remaining three were held by the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, and Toyota bZ4X (61,400 units, ranked 17th). By vehicle segment, B- and D-class models dominated, reflecting a global shift in NEV demand toward mainstream family-oriented vehicles.
