Lamborghini Delays EV Plans, Switches Lanzador to Plug-in Hybrid

Lamborghini has decided to shift the Lanzador—originally intended to be the brand's first all-electric vehicle—to a plug-in hybrid configuration and confirmed that its true first fully electric model will not arrive before 2030. This decision stems from customers' lack of willingness to purchase fully electric vehicles and the current immaturity of EV technology. The Lanzador concept was first unveiled at Monterey Car Week in 2023 as a pure-electric 2+2 luxury grand tourer, slated to become Lamborghini’s fourth product line. The production version is now expected to use a derivative of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid system found in the Urus, with its launch likely delayed until the late 2020s. This marks the third time Lamborghini has revised the Lanzador project’s roadmap. Company executives noted that customers have shown virtually no acceptance of fully electric models and believe existing technology cannot deliver the emotional driving experience central to Lamborghini’s identity. Additionally, Lamborghini explicitly stated it has no plans to develop an all-electric version of the Urus, which will remain the brand’s sole SUV offering. Despite these adjustments, internal R&D efforts continue in key areas of electrification, including battery cell chemistry and software development.
