Unstable lithium supply, coupled with growing demand from energy storage and other markets, is accelerating the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries, moving them from conceptual development into real-world deployment. Industry investment focus has shifted from early-stage lab technologies to three key areas: upstream specialty materials, midstream differentiated cells, and downstream integrated applications. Investors are now prioritizing companies’ ability to deploy production lines, overcome material bottlenecks, and demonstrate strong order fulfillment. Several companies have recently secured significant funding rounds. In April, Qingna Technology raised RMB 200 million in strategic financing to build an 8 GWh intelligent sodium-ion battery production line in Suining. Jiana Energy completed a Series A+ round worth several hundred million RMB to advance key material iterations, expand capacity, and enter global markets. In July, Na-Xin New Energy commissioned a 100,000-ton polyanionic cathode material facility and secured several hundred million RMB in strategic financing to reduce costs. Other firms, including Zhaona New Energy and Yingong Technology, also obtained funding for technological breakthroughs and capacity expansion. Upstream material supplier Dachao Carbon Energy completed its Series B+ round. The primary bottleneck in the sodium-ion battery industry remains insufficient production capacity, which keeps costs relatively high. Scaling up manufacturing through financing can lower cell costs, unlock downstream markets, generate orders to absorb new capacity, and create a virtuous cycle of reinvestment and further expansion. Some companies, such as Zhongna Energy, have already leveraged funding to establish production bases, reduce costs, and scale output. Close collaboration between material suppliers and cell manufacturers is expected to gradually bring sodium-ion battery costs in line with those of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. By 2027, sodium-ion battery prices are projected to match those of LFP batteries, creating clear opportunities to replace lead-acid batteries and complement lithium-ion batteries in specific application scenarios. Leading players are using multiple rounds of financing to solidify their production and revenue footprints, laying the groundwork for future IPOs. The industry is entering a phase of high-quality development, where companies with differentiated technologies, rapid production ramp-up capabilities, and stable order books will attract investor attention—while projects lacking tangible production capacity face elimination. With production lines coming online and costs continuing to fall, large-scale commercialization of sodium-ion batteries is imminent.
