New Energy Vehicle Reliability Test Mileage Standard to Rise to 30,000 km, Aligning with ICE Vehicles

The National Technical Committee on Automotive Standardization recently solicited public comments on three draft regulations concerning type-approval testing procedures for new energy vehicles (NEVs). The proposed revisions aim to uniformly raise the required total mileage for reliability road tests of NEV models to no less than 30,000 kilometers, aligning them with the existing standards for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The affected standards include the "Regulations on Type-Approval Testing Procedures for Electric Vehicles," "Regulations on Type-Approval Testing Procedures for Hybrid Electric Vehicles," and "Regulations on Type-Approval Testing Procedures for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles." According to the draft revisions, the total test mileage for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) would increase from the current 15,000 kilometers to 30,000 kilometers; hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) would require a minimum total test mileage of 30,000 kilometers; plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) would need to complete at least 10,000 kilometers of reliability testing in pure electric mode; and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) would also be subject to a minimum total test mileage of 30,000 kilometers. The revision aims to reflect the current state of NEV technological development and align with the announcement issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in January this year, which mandates that, starting January 1, 2027, conventional fuel-powered vehicles must undergo reliability validation tests covering no less than 30,000 kilometers.
