In June 2024, Germany registered 84,057 battery electric vehicles (BEVs), a year-on-year increase of 78.2%, capturing a market share of 28.4%—surpassing for the first time the individual sales volumes of gasoline-powered cars, diesel vehicles, and conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). During the same period, HEV sales totaled 83,315 units, gasoline cars 60,796 units, diesel cars 33,862 units, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) 32,212 units. Total new car registrations in Germany reached 296,000 in June, up 15.7% year-over-year. Tesla’s sales surged by 317% compared to the same month last year, while BYD entered the top 15 best-selling automotive brands in the country. The record monthly BEV sales were primarily driven by automakers ramping up promotions to meet EU carbon emission targets and consumers reducing their reliance on oil amid an energy crisis triggered by geopolitical tensions. Nevertheless, BEV sales have not yet exceeded the combined total of all non-BEV vehicle types. As of that time, the combined share of BEVs and PHEVs on German roads accounted for approximately 6% of the total vehicle fleet.
