Recently, media reports claiming that "EV owners are replacing their cars as frequently as they change smartphones" have sparked debate over whether electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming fast-moving consumer goods. In response, the Aftermarket Committee of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) clarified that the report misinterpreted the statistic stating that "the average age of the existing stock of new energy passenger vehicles is approximately 1.8 years." This figure reflects the current product structure during the industry’s transitional phase, not the actual vehicle replacement cycle of consumers. As a major durable consumer good, a car’s core attributes—safety, durability, and reliability—remain unchanged despite the ongoing electrification and intelligent transformation. Currently, EV owners’ actual vehicle replacement frequency is far from matching smartphone replacement rates. The perception that “changing an EV is faster than changing a phone” primarily stems from the accelerated pace of new model launches: over 600 new models debuted in China in the first half of this year alone—averaging three per day—as automakers significantly shorten their development cycles. Two main factors drive this trend: First, core EV technologies are still rapidly evolving, with continuous shifts in technical pathways and supply chains leading to noticeable improvements in user experience through frequent product iterations. Second, intensifying market competition compels automakers to launch new models more quickly to maintain visibility and sales volume. However, excessively rapid product iteration also creates challenges, including difficulties in cost allocation, resource waste, and downward pressure on industry profit margins. Some automakers have already begun adjusting their strategies by reducing or optimizing their model lineups. As technologies mature and the market stabilizes, the industry is expected to shift from a focus on “quantity of models” to “quality of products,” which may gradually ease the current controversy.
