In June 2024, Germany registered 84,057 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs), a year-on-year increase of 78.2%, marking the first time BEVs surpassed all other powertrain types to claim a 28.4% share of the new car market that month. During the same period, registrations of conventional hybrid vehicles totaled 83,315 units (28.1% market share), gasoline-powered cars reached 60,796 units (20.5%), diesel vehicles stood at 33,862 units (11.4%), and plug-in hybrids accounted for 32,212 units (10.9%). Total new vehicle registrations in Germany for June amounted to 296,378 units, up 15.7% year-over-year. In the BEV segment, the Tesla Model Y led with 6,023 registrations, securing the top spot and ranking among the top three best-selling models overall. The Volkswagen ID.3 followed in second place with 3,514 units, while the Škoda Enyaq came third with 3,383 units. Among brands, the Volkswagen Group topped overall registrations with 51,058 units, followed by BMW with 26,119 units and Škoda with 24,963 units. Despite BEVs leading monthly sales, as of early 2026, they accounted for only 4.1% of Germany’s approximately 61 million registered motor vehicles, compared to 59.3% for gasoline-powered cars. This data includes commercial vehicles and older vehicles still in use.
