Huawei Advances High-Level ADAS with Multi-Sensor Fusion Approach

Jin Yuzhi, Senior Vice President of Huawei and CEO of Yinwang, recently stated that Huawei adheres to a multi-sensor fusion approach in its intelligent driving assistance technology roadmap. He explained that pure vision-based solutions aim to mimic the human eye, delivering a driving experience close to that of humans, whereas multi-sensor fusion seeks to surpass human perception capabilities. Jin pointed out that human drivers face limitations—such as glare blindness in backlighting, night blindness in darkness, and impaired visibility in heavy rain, fog, or dust. Guided by the principle of "safety first," Huawei has opted to integrate multiple sensors to enhance system reliability. Among these, LiDAR offers high resolution for detecting small objects, while millimeter-wave radar excels in speed measurement and penetration through rain, fog, and dust. Jin emphasized that by leveraging the complementary strengths of multiple sensors, Huawei can achieve safer driver assistance and lay the groundwork for future autonomous driving systems with even higher safety requirements—goals that pure vision-based approaches struggle to meet.
