Europe’s BEV Market Share Hits 25.6% in June 2024, with Multiple Countries Setting New Sales or Share Records

In June 2024, a total of 275,060 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered across 17 major European markets, marking a 39.5% year-on-year increase and accounting for 25.6% of all new vehicle registrations that month. These 17 markets represent approximately 90% of new car sales in the European Union and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). In the first half of 2024, cumulative BEV sales in these regions reached 1,240,000 units, up 33.7% compared to the same period last year. Germany remained Europe’s largest BEV market, registering 84,057 units in June, representing a 28.4% market share. From January to June, Germany recorded 367,388 BEV registrations, a 48.6% year-on-year increase. France registered 55,831 BEVs in June, capturing 29.6% of its domestic new car market—the highest growth rate among major markets. Italy nearly doubled its BEV registrations in the first half of the year, though its market share remained modest at just 6.6%; in June alone, BEVs accounted for 10.1% of new car sales. Several countries set new records for BEV sales or market share in June: Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, and Finland all achieved their highest monthly registration volumes to date. Ireland saw BEVs exceed 50% of new car sales, while Finland reached 48.9%. Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands recorded shares of 35.4%, 37.2%, and 43.5%, respectively. Slovenia and the Czech Republic both posted record highs in terms of both sales volume and market share. Norway continued to lead the region, with BEVs accounting for 96.5% of new car sales in June and 97.6% in H1 2024, although registrations grew by only 1.3% year-on-year. Sweden’s BEV market share stood at 37.8% in the first half of the year, but sales declined by 10.6% year-on-year. The Netherlands saw the steepest drop among reported markets, with BEV sales falling by 18.7%. Penetration rates remained relatively low in some countries: Poland’s BEV market share was 5.2% in June, while the Czech Republic’s stood at 8.1%. As of the end of Q1 2024, cumulative BEV registrations across the EU, the UK, and EFTA countries exceeded 732,000 units, up 26.2% year-on-year.
