Samsung Unveils 80mm Large-Aperture Automotive OLED Panel with Integrated Physical Controls

At the 2026 Korea International Display Fair, Samsung unveiled a new automotive OLED panel featuring a large 80mm-diameter hole in its active display area. This technology builds upon Samsung’s Hole in Active Area (HIAA) technology, which has been commercially deployed since 2019 primarily for smartphone front-facing cameras with apertures of approximately 5mm. The significant increase in aperture size to 80mm is tailored for automotive cockpit applications. Manufacturing such a large opening presents sealing and protection challenges due to OLED materials’ sensitivity to air and moisture. Samsung has addressed these issues by resolving encapsulation at the hole’s edges and optimizing circuit layout to minimize signal interference and response latency. The opening can integrate traditional physical controls—such as gear shift knobs or air vents—directly into the display, eliminating the need to mount these components separately around the screen perimeter. This integration enables a cleaner dashboard design and enhances interior space utilization.
