Geely Proposes Holistic Safety Framework to Tackle New Risks in Smart Cars

At the 2026 China Auto Forum’s Thematic Session 8, Liao Huihong, Director of Geely Auto Research Institute’s Global Safety Division, stated that electrification and intelligentization are redefining the boundaries of automotive safety, rendering traditional quality control systems inadequate in addressing emerging safety challenges. Currently, intelligent driving systems struggle to cover numerous long-tail traffic scenarios, occupant protection mechanisms can fail under specific seating postures, and vehicle connectivity introduces cybersecurity risks—collectively driving a continuous rise in novel safety hazards. Geely regards safety as a non-negotiable quality baseline. In its early years, the company destroyed batches of non-compliant vehicles due to quality issues, firmly establishing a "quality-first" principle. Later, through its "Ningbo Declaration" strategic transformation, Geely formally integrated safety into its core strategy and granted safety requirements veto power in vehicle development processes. To address new challenges in the era of intelligent vehicles, Geely has established nine comprehensive safety systems encompassing active safety, passive safety, new energy safety, digital safety, and ecological safety, further expanding into four safety domains: life, health, property, and privacy. On the hardware front, Geely employs a "Star Armor" cage-type body structure and battery anti-collision designs. In digital security, it has deployed quantum-safe base stations connected to China’s national quantum backbone network. Additionally, leveraging its low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation, Geely enables capabilities such as road risk warnings and peer-to-peer emergency rescue assistance among drivers. Geely has invested over RMB 2 billion to build a Global Comprehensive Safety Center equipped with full-scale validation facilities for crash testing, simulation, and connected-vehicle security. The company holds a cumulative total of 156,000 related patents and has opened key technologies—including flush-mounted door handles and underbody battery collision protection—to the broader industry. Looking ahead, Geely has set the ambitious goals of “zero fatalities, zero health hazards, and zero privacy breaches.” Its safety strategy is shifting from single-vehicle protection toward collaborative efforts with governments, insurers, and industry partners to co-build an integrated, ecosystem-wide intelligent transportation safety framework.
