Frank van Meel, Head of BMW M, stated that the next-generation M3 will be offered in both combustion-engine and all-electric variants, which will be sold simultaneously in the market. The all-electric M3 will be built on the upcoming i3 electric sedan platform and its design direction has already been previewed by the BMW M Vision Neue Klasse concept, continuing the M series’ signature sporty character. The combustion-powered M3 will retain its 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 375 kW while complying with the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards. The all-electric M3 will feature a four-motor layout, prioritizing enhanced dynamic performance, vehicle attitude control, and driver engagement over sheer power output. Van Meel emphasized that the four motors will not operate at full capacity simultaneously; instead, they will work in concert with BMW’s advanced driving dynamics systems to enable precise individual wheel control—for instance, braking the inner wheels while accelerating the outer ones to optimize cornering behavior. The BMW Vision Driving Experience prototype, developed to validate these technologies, already boasts an output of 746 kW, though van Meel noted that such extreme power is unnecessary for everyday driving. According to BMW M, power only becomes meaningful when integrated with sophisticated control systems. The goal for the all-electric M3 is to leverage cutting-edge electric drivetrains and chassis technologies to deliver a dynamic driving experience surpassing that of the traditional combustion-powered M3, fostering healthy internal competition between the two variants to drive mutual technological advancement.
