Mercedes-AMG's New GT Test Car Destroyed in Fire During Hot-Weather Testing in Spain

On July 26, a prototype of the updated Mercedes-AMG GT caught fire during high-temperature testing in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains, resulting in the complete destruction of the vehicle. No injuries were reported. Footage from the scene shows flames rapidly spreading from the rear of the car; the onboard fire extinguisher failed to contain the blaze, and by the time emergency responders arrived, the vehicle had been reduced to a charred shell. The updated model is scheduled for launch in 2027 and will retain its V8 powertrain while also introducing an electric variant. The hybrid version is expected to feature AMG’s E Performance plug-in hybrid technology, integrating an electric motor and battery pack on the rear axle. It remains unclear whether the prototype involved in the incident was equipped with this hybrid system. The manufacturer has not commented on the cause of the fire, and engineers are currently investigating the incident.
