Volvo is developing a new D-segment ultra-luxury flagship sedan, internally codenamed "556," positioned above the current S90 and aimed squarely at competing with the Zunjie S800. The model is planned as a China-exclusive product, developed jointly by Volvo and Geely: Volvo China will handle product definition, safety standards, and whole-vehicle certification, while Geely’s China team will lead the development of the triad of electric systems (battery, motor, and electronic control), vehicle engineering, and supply chain management. The project is spearheaded by Duan Jianjun, who assumed the role of President and CEO of Volvo Cars China in May this year, and is regarded as his top priority since taking office. As Volvo’s first-ever D-segment executive sedan in its 100-year history—and Geely Group’s inaugural foray into this segment in its 40-year history—the "556" project has been granted the highest internal priority and resource allocation within Geely Group. According to insiders, Geely has already put on hold or delayed certain similar projects from its Galaxy, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr brands to ensure that the "556" project receives priority access to the group’s most advanced intelligent driving and smart cockpit technologies, solidifying its position as the flagship model within Geely’s portfolio.
