BMW to Launch First All-Electric Four-Seat Convertible i4 in 2028

BMW Group has approved the production plan for the all-electric i4 convertible, which is expected to launch in 2028 as the brand’s first mass-produced all-electric four-seat convertible. The new model will be built on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse EV platform, sharing its technical architecture with the i3 sedan. It will feature a two-door, four-seat layout and an electrically operated folding fabric soft top—designed to control weight and lower the center of gravity, continuing the design tradition of the 4 Series Convertible. With the global market for electric convertibles still largely untapped, the i4 convertible is positioned as a relatively accessible offering aimed at filling this niche gap. Removing the fixed roof compromises body rigidity, requiring additional structural reinforcements that add weight to the vehicle. Based on the i3 sedan’s EPA-estimated range of approximately 440 miles (about 708 km), the convertible version is expected to see a range reduction of roughly 15%, though it should still exceed 350 miles (about 563 km). The i3 sedan features an 800V electrical architecture supporting up to 400 kW fast charging—capable of adding around 400 km of range in just 10 minutes—and this technology will also be adopted by the i4 convertible. The current i4 Gran Coupe is expected to end production in 2027, creating a roughly one-year product gap for the i4 lineup before the coupe and convertible variants arrive successively in 2028.
