BMW i4 Convertible Spied Testing, Built on Next-Gen Platform, Launch Expected in 2028

Spy shots of the BMW i4 convertible have surfaced for the first time, confirming that the model is under development. The new vehicle is built on BMW’s Neue Klasse (New Class) dedicated electric platform and will share this architecture with the upcoming i3 sedan. Although BMW has discontinued the Z4 and 8 Series convertibles, the i4 convertible signals the brand’s continued commitment to the electric convertible segment. The test mule features a two-door, four-seat layout with a fabric soft top—departing from the retractable hardtop used on the previous-generation 4 Series Convertible. The body panels appear close to production-ready, though the front and rear light clusters remain temporary units. Final production versions will refine the internal lighting design, while the overall shape and mounting positions are expected to stay unchanged. Camouflage on the front fascia mimics BMW’s traditional kidney grille; however, the production model will feature a closed-off horizontal grille integrated seamlessly with the headlights, aligning its styling with the i3. The prototype rides on dual-tone, low-drag alloy wheels and red brake calipers, indicating it’s equipped with at least the M Sport package. Inside, the cabin is expected to follow the i3’s minimalist philosophy, eliminating the iDrive rotary controller and further reducing physical buttons. Thanks to its dedicated EV platform, the car features shorter front and rear overhangs, theoretically allowing for a longer wheelbase. However, rear passenger space in the current prototype shows no significant improvement—a typical trait among convertibles. BMW plans to prioritize the launch of the iX4 crossover coupe (set to debut in fall 2024) and the i3 Touring estate (scheduled for 2027). As such, the i4 convertible is unlikely to arrive before 2028 and may debut alongside the i4 Coupe (codenamed NA2). Upon launch, it will be sold concurrently with the current combustion-engine 4 Series Convertible (G23), which is slated to remain in production until mid-2029.
