Former Tesla Regional Manager Sues Company Over Retaliatory Firing for Reporting Safety Concerns

Javier Medrano, a former regional manager who oversaw Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) testing operations in Houston, has filed a lawsuit alleging that Tesla illegally retaliated against him by terminating his employment after he reported systemic safety and regulatory deficiencies. From October 2024 to May 1, 2025, Medrano managed a team of safety operators tasked with validating Tesla’s FSD software. His responsibilities included reviewing driving footage, conducting weekly ride-alongs, handling safety incidents, and remaining on call for extended hours during workdays. The complaint states that his team grew to 38 members—far exceeding the 1-to-15 management ratio established by Autopilot department head Pete Shiuze. Medrano repeatedly informed Shiuze that severe understaffing prevented operators from maintaining basic rest schedules, but received no response. Amid this extreme resource strain, an incident occurred in his area of responsibility. At the time, Medrano was off-duty but was nonetheless required to remotely direct on-site personnel and instruct operators, leaving him stranded in a hazardous environment for approximately one hour and forcing him to confront a third party who appeared disoriented or impaired. Following the incident, Medrano formally reported the safety risks it revealed and sought to demonstrate Tesla’s longstanding under-resourcing of its Houston operations. Shortly thereafter, he was terminated by the company. Medrano is now seeking reinstatement to his former position, along with compensation for unvested equity awards, lost wages, and damages for emotional distress, strained family relationships, and financial hardship.
