BMW to Launch First Mass-Production All-Electric Four-Seat Convertible i4 in 2028

BMW has approved the all-electric i4 convertible (internal codename NA3) for series production, with a market launch expected in 2028. It will become the brand’s first mass-produced all-electric four-seat convertible. Built on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse EV platform, the model shares its technical architecture with the upcoming i3 sedan (codename NA0) and features a two-door, four-seat (2+2) layout with an electrically operated folding fabric soft top—designed to control weight, lower the center of gravity, and uphold the design legacy of the 4 Series Convertible. Currently, the global market for electric convertibles remains sparse. In the U.S., only the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is available, starting above $200,000. Europe offers the Fiat 500e convertible and the MG Cyberster, but neither is sold in the U.S. The BMW i4 convertible is positioned as a more accessible option and is expected to fill this market gap. Due to the structural requirements of a convertible body, additional reinforcement is needed, resulting in increased curb weight. As a result, its range is projected to be approximately 15% lower than that of the i3 sedan. With the i3 sedan estimated to deliver around 708 km (440 miles) of EPA-rated range, the i4 convertible should still exceed 563 km (350 miles). The i3 sedan utilizes an 800V electrical architecture, supporting up to 400 kW fast charging—capable of adding roughly 400 km (250 miles) of range in just 10 minutes. The current i4 Gran Coupe is expected to end production in 2027, creating a roughly one-year gap in the i4 lineup before the coupe (codename NA2) and convertible variants arrive in 2028.
