Tesla Disables Model Y Robotaxi Turn Signal Chime to Enhance Passenger Experience

Tesla has disabled the turn signal audible indicator in Model Y vehicles used for its Robotaxi service via a software update. This adjustment applies to vehicles operating unsupervised autonomous trips and aims to reduce cabin noise, enhancing passenger comfort. In conventional vehicles, the “clicking” sound of the turn signal provides drivers with operational feedback; however, under fully autonomous operation, this sound serves no practical purpose for passengers. Currently, Tesla’s Robotaxi service operates in seven markets: Austin offers both unsupervised and safety-operator-assisted trips; the Bay Area offers only safety-operator-assisted trips; and Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa offer exclusively unsupervised Model Y trips. In July, Tesla launched fully unsupervised Robotaxi service in Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. As of July, Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet has accumulated over 380,000 miles (approximately 612,000 kilometers) of unsupervised driving, a figure that continues to grow as the service expands. Although future Robotaxi operations are expected to transition to the upcoming Cybercab model, the Model Y remains the primary vehicle in current service.
