Multiple multinational automakers are shifting their R&D focus to China, transforming the country from its traditional role of localized adaptation into a global hub for core technological innovation. Renault Group has inaugurated its Advanced China Development Center (ACDC) office in Hangzhou, collaborating with its Shanghai team to concentrate on cutting-edge technologies. Audi has established an Innovation Technology Center in Shanghai, dedicated to R&D in intelligent electrification and smart connected vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has upgraded its Shanghai R&D center to a global innovation hub. Meanwhile, BMW has converted its Nanjing IT subsidiary into a wholly owned entity, integrating it as one of its six global IT R&D centers. During the internal combustion engine era, multinational automakers’ R&D activities in China primarily involved local adaptations of overseas platforms, lacking authority over platform definition, with technology flowing unidirectionally into China. However, in the intelligent electric vehicle (EV) era, surging Chinese market demand for smart technologies has outpaced traditional R&D models, compelling companies to restructure their global R&D strategies. Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota, and others continue to significantly expand their R&D investments in China. Today, multinational automakers’ R&D operations in China not only serve the local market but also aim to establish a “China-developed, globally adaptable” technology ecosystem. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Renault, and others have already begun exporting technologies developed in China to global markets. Benefiting from China’s strong talent pool, abundant application scenarios, and robust validation environments in software and artificial intelligence, the country has emerged as a key incubator and exporter of critical intelligent EV technologies, underpinning multinational automakers’ global strategic transformation.
