BMW Halts Development of Rugged G74 Hardcore Luxury SUV

BMW had planned to develop a rugged luxury SUV codenamed G74 Rugged, originally intended to compete directly with the Land Rover Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. However, the project failed to secure final approval and development has since stalled. The concept for this vehicle dates back at least three years, initially envisioned as a fully electric model based on BMW’s next-generation NA5 platform—the same architecture underpinning the new iX3. BMW reportedly built a full-scale 1:1 design model, though it remains unclear whether a drivable prototype was ever produced. As enthusiasm for the EV market cooled, the project’s powertrain strategy shifted toward using BMW’s CLAR architecture, sharing the platform with the upcoming G65 X5 and supporting both plug-in hybrid and all-electric variants. Positioned as a large, three-row SUV, the Rugged was designed with outdoor adventure in mind, featuring elements such as a rear-mounted spare tire, practical off-road equipment, a wide panoramic sunroof, and integrated rear-door seating for leisure use. Its cabin was slated to adopt BMW’s Neue Klasse (Next Generation) design language. Although BMW secretly tested several competitor vehicles internally—with the Rivian R1T standing out notably—prompting serious consideration of developing a genuinely capable off-roader rather than merely adding off-road trim packages to existing models, the project was ultimately shelved due to uncertain market prospects. Insiders noted that the niche segment for rugged luxury SUVs is too limited to justify the substantial investment required to develop a dedicated body-on-frame–style vehicle. Moreover, BMW has been streamlining its product lineup in recent years, adopting a more cautious product strategy. It has successively discontinued models such as the 5 Series GT, 6 Series GT, 3 Series GT, and 8 Series, reflecting a strategic shift away from attempting to cover every market segment comprehensively. To date, BMW has neither publicly acknowledged the existence of the Rugged project nor disclosed specific reasons for its suspension.
