On August 3, ZF announced that its global production of Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems has surpassed 100 million units. Since its initial launch in 2001, the system has evolved from being an alternative to traditional hydraulic steering into a core component of modern vehicle architectures and is now regarded as one of the key technologies enabling software-defined vehicles. Ramiro Gutierrez, Senior Vice President of ZF’s Steering Systems Division, stated that EPS has become the industry-standard steering solution—highly energy-efficient, scalable, and software-defined—and lays the foundation for next-generation steer-by-wire technology. Unlike hydraulic systems, which continuously consume energy, EPS uses electricity only during steering maneuvers, helping reduce overall vehicle energy consumption and supporting emissions targets. Currently, ZF’s EPS portfolio covers compact passenger cars, high-performance SUVs, and light commercial vehicles, offering three configurations: column-assist, dual-pinion, and belt-driven. The company has driven production growth through its global R&D and manufacturing footprint across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. In the Chinese market, ZF’s Asia-Pacific division has already achieved mass production of steer-by-wire systems. Since localizing EPS production in China in 2012, the company has manufactured more than 25 million EPS units in the country, widely deployed across numerous domestic and international vehicle models.
