Suzuki Plans to Export Electric Microcars to Europe from 2027

Suzuki Motor plans to begin exporting an electric kei car to Europe as early as 2027. The model, which will debut in Japan in autumn 2024 and be produced at Suzuki’s Shizuoka Prefecture plant, is targeting the UK and Italy as potential markets. This marks Suzuki’s first overseas export of a kei car that is largely identical to its Japanese domestic version since its limited exports of the Cappuccino convertible sports car in the 1990s. Based on the Vision e-Sky concept, the vehicle is scheduled for launch in Japan in November 2024 as Suzuki’s first battery-electric kei passenger car, offering a range of up to 310 kilometers. Certain specifications will be adapted to comply with European regulations and road conditions, and the battery will be supplied by a subsidiary of BYD. Although the exact pricing has not yet been announced, the car is expected to retail for under £20,000 (approximately $27,000) in the UK, positioning it against city EVs like the Renault Twingo. The European Union introduced a new vehicle classification standard in 2025, modeled partly on Japan’s kei car framework; however, since this model will not be manufactured within the EU, it is unlikely to qualify for related subsidies. In the fiscal year ended March 2024, Suzuki’s European sales declined by 15% to 187,000 units. The company aims to leverage growth in Europe’s EV market with this new model to revitalize its local business and pave the way for expansion into other regions—such as Southeast Asia—that favor compact vehicles.
