General Motors is developing an in-house AI-powered vehicle assistant that will integrate conversational AI, GM-specific vehicle knowledge, and OnStar smart services, enabling it to understand vehicle status, driving conditions, and user needs more deeply than the current Gemini AI found in GM vehicles. Anna Santos, GM’s head of voice, artificial intelligence, and machine learning product management, stated that the company is collaborating with an unnamed AI model provider to develop this technology. Unlike Gemini AI, the new assistant will have access to real-time telemetry data from the car’s sensors, allowing for deep integration across the entire vehicle. Currently, Gemini AI supports functions such as adjusting climate control, managing infotainment systems, and providing access to an AI knowledge base. However, because it was not developed internally by GM, it cannot access real-time vehicle data—and GM does not grant third parties permission to do so. Anna Santos did not disclose a specific launch date for the new AI assistant, noting that even after development is complete, extensive testing across GM’s full vehicle lineup will be required to ensure stability and safety before its release.
