Porsche's new CEO, Michael Leiters, told Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview published before August 5, 2024, that the electric version of the 718 will launch as scheduled, dismissing earlier rumors suggesting it might be delayed or canceled. He described the electric 718 as the "economically optimal solution" and confirmed it will share a platform with the upcoming all-electric Audi TT. Leiters also clearly stated that Porsche has no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the near term. Although the company is considering streamlining the Taycan lineup by reducing the number of variants, he emphasized that given the significant investment already made in the model, Porsche will continue monitoring market demand. Additionally, Leiters noted that Porsche seeks "greater flexibility" in its electrification transition, including support for renewable fuels (e-fuels). He also pointed out that the pace of electric vehicle adoption has fallen short of the levels anticipated when the European Union set its CO₂ reduction targets.
