BYD Launches First Locally Made Plug-in Hybrid Flex-Fuel Song Pro in Brazil

On August 4, 2024, BYD officially launched its first locally produced plug-in hybrid flexible-fuel vehicle in Brazil—the Song Pro Super Hybrid Flexible-Fuel Edition. The model can run on pure electricity, gasoline, or ethanol, offering an all-electric range of 60 km for the GL variant and 120 km for the GS variant. The vehicle is manufactured at BYD’s plant in Camaçari, Bahia State, Brazil, with over 50% of its components sourced locally. The project took two years to develop, with an investment of BRL 100 million (approximately RMB 133 million). Alexander Baldi, Senior Vice President of BYD Brazil, stated that this marks the first time Chinese and Brazilian R&D teams have jointly developed a model specifically tailored for the Brazilian market. BYD plans to invest a total of BRL 5.5 billion in the Camaçari plant and will begin producing batteries and other components there starting October 2025. The factory is expected to produce around 180,000 vehicles in 2024, supporting BYD’s target of selling approximately 200,000 vehicles in Brazil by 2026—about 150,000 of which will be supplied by this facility. In July 2024, BYD sold 23,465 vehicles in Brazil, a year-over-year increase of 142%, capturing a market share of 9.1% and ranking fourth in the local market. Among these, the Dolphin GS model alone sold 5,861 units in the month, topping Brazil’s retail sales chart.
