GAC Aion’s AION S series vehicles equipped with CALB’s 177Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells have recently experienced widespread swelling and deformation issues. On the evening of July 18, CALB issued a public statement acknowledging that it had become aware of battery system failures in certain AION S vehicles fitted with its batteries under specific operating conditions. The company announced that affected vehicle owners could visit its service centers for free inspections and, based on inspection results, receive complimentary battery system repairs along with dedicated maintenance services. According to a report on August 6, CALB has internally launched a technology-driven reform centered on “quality and safety,” implementing substantive adjustments to its process traceability, validation systems, organizational structure, and customer relationship mechanisms, while further tightening manufacturing standards. The company has also redesigned key components of its battery cells—including the casing, explosion-proof valve, and welding margins of the electrode terminals—to enhance durability and safety margins. Data from the China Automotive Battery Industry Innovation Alliance shows that in June 2024, CALB’s domestic power battery installations reached 5.2 GWh, representing a market share of 6.82%.
