July 2026 Auto Reputation Index Hits Five-Month Low as EV Issues Rise

In July 2026, the overall automotive user reputation index stood at 14,314.6, marking a five-month low. That month, a total of 140 automakers, 142 brands, and 1,008 vehicle models appeared on the reputation index ranking—an increase of 2 automakers, 13 brands, and 41 models compared to the previous month. Complaints related to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles accounted for 63% of all feedback, down slightly from the prior month, while complaints concerning battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) rose. SUVs accounted for nearly 50% of all problem reports, with compact, mid-size, and upper mid-size sedans collectively making up over 40%. Issues related to service and body/electrical systems together represented 66% of the total complaint index, driven primarily by problems with infotainment systems, traction battery failures, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Engine-related issues ranked third. Complaints about Chinese-brand vehicles rose to 58% of the total, while Japanese, German, and American brands accounted for smaller shares. Chinese brands saw the majority of complaints centered on service and body/electrical issues; German brands were predominantly criticized for transmission problems; Japanese brands faced notable engine-related complaints; and American brands received frequent reports concerning steering system issues. Feedback rates were notably high for 2025 model-year vehicles, while complaint volumes surged significantly for 2026 models. Among vehicles launched within the past three years, domestic models dominated the top spots in problem reporting. Older models from German, American, and Japanese brands also generated substantial feedback, and across all segments, non-refundable deposits remained a widespread issue.
