Mercedes-AMG Unveils All-New Four-Door Electric Coupe GT 53

Mercedes-AMG unveiled the entry-level GT four-door electric fastback, the GT 53, on August 6. The model features a dual-motor layout, with one permanent-magnet synchronous motor mounted on each axle, delivering a combined peak output of 400 kW and a maximum torque of 800 N·m. Compared to the flagship GT 63, the GT 53 has one fewer motor and less than half the maximum power, yet it retains the same battery technology and 600 kW ultra-fast charging capability. Its WLTP-estimated maximum range reaches 809 km—surpassing both the three-motor GT 55 and GT 63 variants. When measured using a 0.3-meter rolling start, the GT 53 accelerates from 0 to 97 km/h in 3.4 seconds; from a standing start, the time increases to 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h. The vehicle is equipped with a 106 kWh battery pack compatible with an 800V electrical architecture, enabling peak charging power of up to 600 kW—allowing it to charge from 10% to 80% state of charge in just 11 minutes, equivalent to adding over 70 kWh of energy. The front motor engages primarily when additional traction or enhanced performance is required. When idle, it is mechanically decoupled via a disconnect mechanism, allowing the car to operate in pure rear-wheel-drive mode. Power from the rear motor is delivered through a two-speed transmission: first gear features a shorter ratio optimized for launch acceleration and urban driving, while second gear uses a taller ratio to balance high-speed performance and efficiency. The GT 53 comes standard with AMG Ride Control air suspension featuring adaptive dampers, along with a fully continuously variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system that supports torque vectoring. It offers six driving programs and adjustable accelerator pedal response, though it omits the GT 63’s Race mode and nine-stage traction control system. Additionally, the GT 53 introduces an AMG Force Sport+ mode that simulates the sound of the previous-generation AMG E 53’s turbocharged inline-six engine and incorporates virtual gearshift effects. Drivers can actively control gear changes via steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. According to foreign media reports, the GT 53 is expected to be priced significantly lower than the GT 63, potentially approaching the €107,300 (approximately RMB 837,000) starting price of the base all-wheel-drive Porsche Taycan.
