Xiaohongshu Unveils New AI Governance Rules: Mandates Transparency for AI Accounts, Violators Face Bans

On August 7, Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) released its "AI Governance Policy Announcement," explicitly requiring creators who operate accounts using AI-generated virtual personas to clearly disclose their use of AI and proactively label any notes created or edited by AI. The platform stated that voluntary disclosure will not affect account traffic, and any unlabeled AI-generated content will be automatically detected by the system and uniformly marked accordingly. The announcement prohibits the use of cloud-based AI tools or mobile scripts to automatically operate accounts, impersonate real users in interactions, or disseminate methods for AI-powered content rewriting ("washing"), watermark removal, or circumventing content moderation. Additionally, the platform opposes the use of AI to synthesize others' voices or faces for content creation, bans fabricating news events or social hot topics with AI for traffic generation, and forbids producing low-quality content that is vulgar, sensational, or otherwise inappropriate. For violations, Xiaohongshu will impose penalties based on severity, including limiting content distribution, suspending commenting privileges, or permanently banning accounts. Any content that violates laws, regulations, or community standards—particularly involving illegal activities, pornography, or breaches of safety底线—will be strictly handled according to community guidelines, regardless of whether it was generated by AI.
