Chrome and Edge Update Local AI Model Storage Requirements: At Least 20GB Free Space Needed

From:Internet Info Agency 2026-08-09 17:01:00

Google Chrome recently updated its official help documentation, clarifying that devices must have at least approximately 20GB of free disk space available before Chrome will begin downloading on-device AI models. This 20GB represents the minimum storage threshold required to initiate the download—not the actual size of the model itself. Users can disable on-device AI features in Chrome via Settings > System. Microsoft Edge has simultaneously raised its local AI model storage requirements, stipulating that the disk volume containing the Edge user profile must have at least 20GB of free space available. Additionally, Edge now requires a minimum of 5.5GB of GPU memory. Other prerequisites include running Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS 13.3 or later, and using an internet connection that is either unlimited or not metered. If available disk space drops below 10GB, Edge will automatically delete its local AI models to free up space.
