Zuckerberg Calls for Looser AI Restrictions as Chinese Firms Enter Race with Open-Weight Models

From:Internet Info Agency 2026-08-10 23:31:00

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently called on the U.S. government to ease restrictions on open-source AI models to enhance competitiveness against Chinese companies. He argued that the widespread adoption of AI technology should not be monopolized by a few institutions and warned that equating AI safety with extreme centralization is problematic. Meta has recently released MuseGlimmer, an AI model utilizing 4-bit quantization technology that can run locally on devices with lower VRAM requirements. Open-weight AI models are gaining attention due to their lower training costs, publicly available core components, and support for user customization. Chinese companies have launched competitive open-weight models such as Moonshot AI’s KimiK3, Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Max, and DeepSeek’s V4-Flash, which now rival top-tier U.S. AI models in capability.
