Honda Halts Three EV Projects and Revises Electrification Strategy

On August 14, 2024, Honda disclosed that it had shelved three near-production all-electric vehicle (EV) projects: the Honda 0 Saloon sedan, the Honda 0 SUV, and the Acura RSX. These models were originally slated for production at the EV Hub in Marysville, Ohio. The Honda 0 Saloon and 0 SUV made their debut at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show, while the Acura RSX was unveiled at Monterey Car Week in 2025. This strategic shift follows Honda’s first annual net loss since going public, reported for fiscal year 2026 (April 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026). The company posted a net loss attributable to owners of ¥423.9 billion (approximately RMB 18.275 billion), a 150.72% decline compared to the previous year. Honda has also terminated its partnership with General Motors based on GM’s Ultium EV platform, with related joint projects scheduled to be formally dissolved by the end of 2026. Additionally, the company has canceled plans to build an EV-dedicated plant in Canada and is converting the Marysville EV Hub into a facility capable of producing internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, and EVs—described as having “flexible production capabilities.” Currently, Honda is redirecting its EV resources toward solid-state battery development. In June 2026, the company announced a collaboration with QuantumScape, based in San Jose, California, to develop solid-state lithium-metal batteries aimed at improving EV charging times and energy efficiency. Existing EV powertrain and battery programs have been halted, with production focus shifting toward hybrid vehicles.
