On August 17, a traffic accident occurred inside the Fengxi Tunnel on the Shaxia Expressway in Tong'an District, Xiamen. The driver, surnamed Lin, activated the lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control driver-assistance systems but then looked down at his mobile phone, causing the vehicle to drift out of its lane and scrape against the tunnel’s cable trench. The incident resulted in body damage to the car and deployment of the airbags, though Lin was unharmed. Traffic police investigated the case and determined that Lin was distracted and responded improperly, holding him fully responsible for the accident. Currently, the highest level of driver-assistance technology available in consumer vehicles on the market is Level 2 (L2), which provides only partial automation and remains strictly an aid—the driver must remain attentive to road conditions at all times and be ready to take immediate control of the vehicle. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has explicitly required automakers not to market L2 driver-assistance systems as "autonomous driving." Traffic authorities emphasized that even when driver-assistance features are engaged, drivers remain fully legally accountable and must not delegate complete control of vehicle safety to the system.
