According to market research firm Dataforce, Mercedes-Benz models accounted for 18% of newly registered taxis in Germany in the first half of 2026, up from 8% during the same period in 2025. This share had previously reached 45% in 2022. Starting in January 2026, Mercedes-Benz introduced a 24% discount on two diesel variants of its E-Class, bringing their prices below €40,000. Originally scheduled to expire in July, this promotion has now been extended through the end of the year. In all of 2025, only 72 new E-Class taxis were registered in Germany; by contrast, 126 were registered in just the first half of 2026. Additionally, the Vito model is eligible for an 18% discount plus a €6,000 subsidy, while the V-Class receives a 3% discount and a €5,000 subsidy. Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the VLE—the fully electric successor to the V-Class—into taxi fleets. However, in its more spacious configurations, the VLE may exceed 3.5 tonnes in weight, surpassing the limit permitted under a standard Class B driver’s license. In the first half of 2026, BYD registered 10 new taxis in Germany. The company’s head of business customer sales in Germany estimates total annual sales of around 500 units in 2026, with a four-digit target set for 2027. The BYD Seal 6 Estate is offered to fleet operators at under €30,000—equivalent to a 37% discount off the standard list price—and BYD also plans to offer its fully electric Atto 3 and Sealion 7 models. Currently, Volkswagen, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz together hold 90% of Germany’s newly registered taxi market, with Volkswagen alone accounting for over 50%.
