On August 11, PowerCo Battery (Dalian) Co., Ltd. completed its registration, with Volkswagen (China) Investment Co., Ltd. holding a 10% stake and PowerCo, Volkswagen Group’s battery subsidiary, holding the remaining 90%. The company serves as PowerCo’s China branch, and its chairman is a Volkswagen Group expert specializing in traction batteries. Established in 2022, PowerCo oversees Volkswagen’s global battery business and plans to invest over €20 billion jointly with partners by 2030. In China, Volkswagen has adopted a dual strategy of “in-house production plus external procurement” for batteries. It has partnered with Gotion High-Tech to build a battery plant in Hefei, scheduled to begin mass production in November 2025, though it has not yet supplied batteries to FAW-Volkswagen or SAIC Volkswagen. Currently, new energy vehicles produced by FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen primarily use CATL battery cells. Volkswagen’s new factory in Dalian is seen as a strategic move to establish a standardized cell production facility in northern China, enabling localized manufacturing of “Volkswagen Standard Cells.” As of the third quarter of 2025, Volkswagen holds a 24.29% stake in Gotion High-Tech.
