Aston Martin Considers Manual Gearbox Return, Faces Electronic Integration Hurdles

On August 20, Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark stated that the company is considering a return to manual transmissions, though significant technical challenges remain. The last Aston Martin production model offered with a manual gearbox was the pre-facelift Vantage; this option was discontinued around 2022 during the model’s update. Hallmark noted that previous manual transmissions were based on older vehicle architectures and legacy electronic systems, and reintroducing them would require adapting to modern electronics and overhauling the control systems. He added that integrating modern safety and driver-assistance features makes removing or modifying these systems prohibitively expensive—potentially costing more than developing an entirely new manual transmission. Separately, at the 2026 Monterey Car Week, Aston Martin unveiled its new V12 supercar, the Valen, powered by a 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Limited to just 150 units globally, the Valen accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds.
