GM Reaches Tentative Deal with Canada’s Unifor Union Covering Over 4,600 Workers

General Motors has reached a tentative agreement with Canada’s Unifor union covering more than 4,600 GM employees represented by the union. The agreement was announced over the weekend of August 25, less than two weeks after negotiations began on August 10. Details of the deal will be presented to union members next weekend and have already received unanimous support from Unifor’s GM Master Bargaining Committee. Unifor-represented GM workers include approximately 1,050 employees at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. The plant, which began operations in 1989, previously produced BrightDrop electric vans, but GM halted the program in October 2023, leaving roughly 30% of Unifor members currently laid off or on temporary layoff. The tentative agreement is expected to closely mirror the previous deal reached between Unifor and Ford. Under that agreement, workers received a 9% wage increase over three years, raising base production wages to CAD $50.20 per hour and skilled trades wages to CAD $62.71 per hour. Full-time permanent employees received a one-time bonus of CAD $10,000, while temporary workers received CAD $2,000. The agreement also included cost-of-living allowances, enhanced health-care benefits for retirees, and additional support for laid-off workers. Furthermore, Ford committed to investing CAD $700 million in its Essex Engine Plant to boost V8 engine production and plans to add a third production shift by 2029.
