Tesla filed a patent application on August 25 describing a method to directly incorporate materials capable of absorbing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the housing of vehicle front-facing cameras. This aims to mitigate the issue of VOCs condensing on the interior surface of the windshield and forming a hazy film that obstructs the camera’s view. The technology involves manufacturing plastic components near the camera using polypropylene infused with microporous crystalline aluminosilicate particles—similar to zeolites—which constitute approximately 70% of the material by weight. These particles feature pore sizes ranging from about 3 to 10 angstroms, enabling them to adsorb various types of VOC molecules. Tesla plans to distribute the absorbent particles uniformly throughout the plastic matrix rather than merely coating the surface, ensuring long-term, continuous adsorption performance. Currently, in the U.S., Tesla offers a cleaning service for this issue at a cost of approximately $50 to $89 (roughly RMB 336.5 to 598.9). In September 2025, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that simplifying the front camera cleaning process was a “key area of focus” for the company. It has not yet been confirmed whether this patented technology will be implemented in production vehicles.
